High-quality products using duplex printing techniques
Duplex printing is mainly used for the brilliant reproduction of black and white photographs printed in two different colours: a darker colour (black in the case of grey-scale photos) for shadow areas and a lighter colour (e.g. grey) for mid-tones and highlights.
In order to retain the typical character of old photographs, a brownish or bluish tone can also be used as a second colour.
The production of high-quality duplex prints requires special lithographic processing of the black and white photographs and the correct ink formular for printing the duo tone.
With the aid of duplex technology, the tonal scale can be expanded and images can be reproduced in a very photorealistic manner.

Interview with the authors
“The production of ‘Bastionen des Lichts’ [Bastions of light] was a great challenge, especially for quality-aware printers such as Medialis. State-of-the-art technology made it possible to plot the image and text data directly as fully imposed formes, ensuring optimum register accuracy in the production run. The final printing process showed how important it had been to take so much care in the pre-press procedures. Our book was printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 five-colour press. The highest possible colour densities were applied in order to maintain the compactness and the deepness of the colour of the original photographs, ensuring at the same time that no shadow details were lost and the duo-tone shades remained consistent.”
“No excellence without enthusiasm. A successful project rarely reveals the amount of effort taken. The enthusiasm and dedication of the persons involved is often taken for granted.
For this reason, the authors would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project.”
